5 Steps to help you create a vision board that is fail-proof and easy to follow
In case you missed it, January 13 was National Vision Board Day. If you are like me and did not know this date existed, fret not because I am here to remind you that there’s still time to get our vision boards ready for this new year. Whenever a new year rolls around, we begin to also envision what a new year, new me would look like. We start to daydream about the things we want to do such as traveling, getting our bodies into shape, learning new things and creating new habits. There are so many, many things but we also know that a year can handle only so many activities. In order to not get overwhelmed with our goals and dreams, one of the preferred goal getting actions is creating a vision board.
What is a Vision Board?
Before getting started on what we need to start that vision board, let’s find out what it is. A vision board is a collage of images and words that we build to capture the essence of what we want to attract. There are several types of vision boards from digital boards, collage boards, and even planners. You create it however you want it is up to you just make sure you can see it everyday.
Steps to creating a fail-proof vision board
- Set an Intention. An Intention is to specify exactly what you want.
- Brainstorm and write down your visions, goals and dreams.
- Search for pictures, words, items or drawings that support your vision.
- Write down the specific steps you will be taking to accomplish that goal.
- Revisit your vision board weekly, monthly and quarterly to see how far you have come
How to manifest your vision using the vision board?
To start off this answer, you need to know what manifest actually means. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, manifest means to make evident or certain by showing or displaying. In a sense, your vision board will be a reflection of what you make evident or display in your life. You are creating a manifestation, like making a wish but taking steps to reach it.
One of my favorite meanings of manifestation can be found in Alison Davie’s book Manifest Your Power: How to Realize Your Dreams and Live the Life You Desire: “Manifestation is about turning your dreams into reality, by switching up your mindset and using the power of positive thought. In other words, if you focus on your aspirations and think positively, you can work towards making them happen… Manifestation means collaborating with the universe and working together to create the life you want. It’s about looking for those signs and clues and trusting your intuition. “
The simplest way to manifest your vision board is to write down and follow your specific steps. Make it as simple as possible and easy to follow, treat it like your grocery list.
What is the difference between a vision board and a dream board?
Recently, I’ve heard of the term dream board which I had never knew of. But had to include it because sometimes a vision and a dream can go hand in hand. However, a dream board is a bucket list of long term goals. A vision board is a visual representation of your short term goals.
Vision boards are short term goals because they are created annually as opposed to long-term goals which could take a lifetime. We can continue to add the same goal year after year because there are goals that do take time. I like to think that a vision board is the vehicle that gets you closer to your dreams.
I believe that vision boards are a very helpful tool in keeping us goal-orientated and focused. We are human after all and will probably not be able to accomplish too many things in 1 year. We need to be gentle with ourselves. Sometimes it’s not realistic too place too many things in our vision board, but the vision is the big picture, not the very fine details. We have families, pets, businesses, and ourselves, to take care of and sometimes it feels like our visions are so far away. I don’t believe things are unachievable but they will definitely look very different to each one of us because we all have unique circumstances. So even if you place the same image and intention year after year, just continue to create that vision board. You have not failed yourself, you just need more time and patience. After all, it’s your life and you can choose it to live it however you want. A vision board helps place us in a mindset of living an intentional life in the now and in the future.
If you’ve created your vision board and would like to share it, comment down below your blog or social media handle (i.e. Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr only) so that we can cheer each other on. Below are two of my prior year vision boards from 2021/2022 & 2023.
